Year 10 Dance

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Miss C. Robinson

This course will develop your technical skills in movement and performance, as well as develop your dance vocabulary. You will focus on specific elements of dance and choreographic devices to enrich your kete of knowledge. 

Dance is a performing art, and therefore your creativity will be challenged as you learn to grow your confidence, fitness and self-expression.

To be a dancer you must also be an athlete, physical fitness and health maintained with class workouts and research into anatomy/nutrition for dancers. 

Performance opportunities will be given and attendance may be required for assessment. 


Since the late 90s, educators and policymakers have been discussing the need for 21st Century Skills: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration these skills define the difference between careers that will be lost to automation and careers that will continue to be valuable. Dance teaches these transferable skills and equips you for your future no matter what career you choose.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Basic technique classes and large group work is completed in term 1 to create relationships and build technical foundations for more individualized work later in the year.
We complete our group dance assessment in this term.

Term 2
Small group work is the focus of this term. Dancers learn how to choreograph movement that relates to specific ideas/themes important to them. We also explore different styles, where they come from and what they are used for.
Group dances will be choreographed and performed for our second assessment.

Recommended Prior Learning

Knowledge of the dance elements (Year 9 Dance)

Ideally, experience and interest in fitness or dance outside of school

Assessment Information

There are two assessments year 10 dance:

1. Dance Performance, this assesses the 'Practical Knowledge' and 'Communicating Ideas' parts of the NZ Curriculum. This assessment is completed as a group dance for a selected audience (this may be dance recital).
2. Dance Choreography, this assesses the 'Developing Ideas and Understanding Context' parts of the NZ Curriculum. This assessment is completed as a in small groups for a selected audience. Students show understanding of a dance style and choreography tools.
