Subject Description

Students will work in consultation with their teacher to devise a personalized learning programme which will compromise of up to a maximum total of 18 credits. Below are some examples of possible assessment combinations.

OPTION 1: Performance Course
This course is designed to hone your technical and performance skills. You can focus on one specific genre of dance (such as hip hop, jazz or ballet) or diversify your skill set across many.
- 2.3 Perform a Social or Ethnic Dance to Communicate Understanding of the Style - 4 Credits
- 2.4 Perform a Theatre Dance to Communicate Understanding of the Dance - 4 Credits
- 2.5 Perform a Repertoire of Dance - 6 Credits
- 2.8 Demonstrate Understanding of a Dance Genre or Style in Context - 4 Credits
Internal and External: 18 Credits
Internal Only: 14 Credits
OPTION 2: Choreography Course
This course is designed to hone your choreography skills and can be completed without performing in your works. These standards dive deep into why and how we create dance, utilizing a predominantly contemporary approach.
- 2.1 Choreograph a Group Dance to Communicate an Intention - 4 Credits
- 2.2 Choreograph a Solo Dance to Communicate an Intention - 4 Credits
- 2.6 Demonstrate Understanding of a Range of Choreographic Processes - 4 Credits
- 2.7 Provide an Interpretation of a Dance Performance with Supporting Evidence (Ihi Frenzy) - 4 Credits
Internal and External: 16 Credits
OPTION 3: Cultural Course
This course is designed to develop Pasifika, Maori Performing Arts or other cultures within the classroom. These standards allow you to gain your level two qualification while taking a culturally specific pathway through dance. Explore traditional styles of dance and the world of Maori Contemporary.
- 2.1 Choreograph a Group Dance to Communicate an Intention - 4 Credits
- 2.3 Perform a Social or Ethnic Dance to Communicate Understanding of the Style - 4 Credits
- 2.5 Perform a Repertoire of Dance - 6 Credits
And either:
- 2.7 Provide an Interpretation of a Dance Performance with Supporting Evidence (Ihi Frenzy) - 4 Credits
or
- 2.8 Demonstrate Understanding of a Dance Genre or Style in Context (Kapa Haka) - 4 Credits

Subject Overview
Term 1
Basic technique classes and large group work is completed in term 1 to create relationships and build technical foundations for more individualized work later in the year.
First internals completed.
Term 2
Small group and individual standards are completed. Students are encouraged to collaborate with their other subject areas (e.g use a music composition for dance choreography).
Second internal completed.
Term 3
Dance Recital is a big part of this term, usually the last internal students sit will be presented at the recital.
The external exam prelim is conducted for those sitting the the exam.
Third internal completed.
Term 4
Wrapping back to the first term, we spend our class time working on technique and performance qualities.
Exam preparation and revision is part of this terms in class time however, not all of it.
Recommended Prior Learning
Students must:
- Have sound technique in one or more styles of dance
- Be familiar with choreographic tools such as elements, devices and structures

Additional costs may apply to attend out of school performances.
Pathway
Often polytec courses (such as Whitiriea) offer entry via audition to tertiary courses straight from year 12.
