Level 3 Mathematics with Flexibility
Subject Description

This is a Level 3 Mathematics, Statistics, and/or Calculus course designed to give students complete flexibility over which standards they study. At the start of the year, students will work with their teacher to decide what they want to study, depending on their own individual pathways or abilities. They can then follow that programme entirely at their own pace and will sit assessments only when they and their teacher think they are ready.
A Flipped Learning model is followed where students will learn from a combination of videos, teacher support, workbooks, group activities ... whichever best suits their strongest learning style. A specialist teacher will always be available, to provide one on one help and advice. Students are required to reflect on their learning through a digital learning journal which is checked by their teacher once per week and will have a year planner available to them to track their time and progress.
This model affords students more than just Mathematics learning with the purpose being to teach and cultivate self-management skills that will benefit them in whichever life pathway they choose. Hybrid level courses are also able to be developed for each personal circumstance (some Level 2 and some Level 3 standards).
This course is an approved pathway through Mathematics and/or Statistics allowing for the attainment of up to 3 UE subject. A maximum of 18 credits is recommended - students following a Calculus pathway will need to have more.
Students wanting/needing multiple Mathematics pathways will need to pick this subject twice. This course is intended for any student who is ready to study Mathematics, Statistics, and/or Calculus at Level 3.
Subject Overview
Term 1
All students design their own programme and will spend some time learning how to approach and organise their workload. A learning programme will be designed aiming at a maximum of 18 credits. However, students seeking entry to a University Calculus course will be directed towards the standards they require which will, in fact, exceed 18 credits.
Assessments will begin when students are ready and have booked in with their teacher.
Term 1 learning journal entries will be completed weekly.

Term 2 learning journal entries will be completed weekly.

Term 3
Term 3 learning journal entries will be completed weekly.
Assessments will begin when students are ready and have booked in with their teacher.
Term 4
Term 4 learning journal entries will be completed weekly.
Assessments will begin when students are ready and have booked in with their teacher.
Recommended Prior Learning
Students must have achieved some credits from Level 2 Mathematics, it would be unrealistic to attempt any Level 3 Mathematics standards unless you have experienced success at Level 2.
The Calculus pathway at level 3 require solid achievement in the Algebra and Calculus externals at Level 2 (Merit is recommended but not required).
The Statistics pathway at level 3 require solid achievement at Level 3 Time Series internal in Yr12 and/or Level 2 Probability external.
Approximate Costs and Equipment/Stationery
A device will be needed, especially for Statistics.
For certain papers, a Graphics Calculator is needed otherwise a Scientific Calculator will be sufficient.
Students may elect to buy write on workbooks for some of the standards, they cost $7-8 each.

Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
